Health officials intensify surveillance after Chandipura outbreak spreads across Gujarat
Following a recent surge in Chandipura virus activity, Gujarat's health ministry has stepped up its surveillance and testing operations across multiple districts. From June 30 through August 8, 217 suspected cases were logged, with 39 laboratory‑confirmed infections and a death toll of 23.
The department disclosed that 208 of the collected samples have already yielded results, while nine remain pending. Earlier figures released on July 14 showed 27 suspected cases, seven confirmations, twelve negatives, and eight awaiting results. The earliest cluster emerged in Panchmahal district, where two villages recorded the deaths of two young children.
In an effort to curb further spread, hundreds of health workers have been deployed for community screening, sample gathering, and extensive insecticide fogging aimed at sandfly vectors. Experts underline that Chandipura virus, transmitted by sandflies, can cause acute encephalitis syndrome, particularly in children, and emphasize the necessity of swift medical intervention.
