Government's ₹1,500 Crore Initiative Aims to Build World‑Class Bio‑Research Ecosystem

New Delhi, 15 July – The Ministry of Science and Technology announced the launch of Phase‑III of the Biomedical Research Career Programme, backed by a ₹1,500 crore investment.

Funding is divided with ₹1,000 crore from the Department of Biotechnology and ₹500 crore provided by the Welcome Trust of London, forming a key international partnership to elevate India’s biomedical research standing.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science and Technology, said the programme will create a robust ecosystem by training scientists, clinicians, public‑health experts, communicators and managers, and by encouraging collaborative research across fields.

He emphasized that biotechnology is set to become a core driver of India’s economic growth, noting the bio‑economy’s rise from $10 billion in 2014 to over $195 billion in 2025, with a projected $300 billion by 2030. The nation already hosts about 12,000 biotech start‑ups and counts among the top global vaccine producers.

The event included remarks from scholars who will benefit from the scheme, as well as presentations on the programme’s anticipated scientific contributions and its role in addressing national and global health challenges.
