International report flags Bangladesh measles crisis as preventable tragedy
Dhaka, Aug 15 — A new GCDG analysis titled *Preventable Tragedy: Bangladesh 2026 Measles Outbreak* describes the current situation as one of the gravest public‑health disasters in the nation’s recent history. The report points to a combination of interrupted vaccine supplies, cancelled supplementary immunisation activities, and sluggish procurement as key drivers.
Since the start of the year, Bangladesh has recorded 17,800 confirmed measles cases and 141,776 suspected cases. In the past day alone, DGHS documented 728 new suspected infections and 70 confirmed ones. The death toll rose by eight children, bringing the total to 902, including 99 confirmed deaths.
The analysis criticises the interim government’s shift from UNICEF’s established allocation framework to an open‑tender system, a change that, according to GCDG, hampered timely vaccine acquisition and distribution.
