Experimental Vaccines and Treatments Deployed Amid Rapid Ebola Spread in Eastern DRC

In response to the accelerating Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak, the DRC health ministry announced the emergency use of two experimental vaccines that have entered human trials. These vaccines, developed specifically for the Bundibugyo strain, are being administered alongside the WHO‑sanctioned Partners Treatment Trial, which evaluates remdesivir, the monoclonal antibody MABP‑134, and a combination regimen.

Health Minister Roger Kambale described the response as "very swift and very strong," yet acknowledged that the virus’s early symptoms are nonspecific, leading many infected individuals to remain in their communities for days before seeking care. This delay fuels silent transmission chains.

Researchers are also investigating the oral antiviral obeldesivir as a post‑exposure prophylaxis (PEP) option, aiming to protect those who have been in contact with confirmed cases. Simultaneously, scientists are studying whether the licensed Ebola vaccine Ervebo, originally designed for the Zaire strain, might provide cross‑protection against Bundibugyo, although definitive evidence is still pending.

The WHO cautioned that the risk of further spread within the DRC remains "very high" and urged continued international support for vaccine deployment, treatment access, and robust community engagement.
