Ending Yoga Right: Bath, Meal Timing and Meditation Advice

Yoga is widely valued for its physical and mental benefits, but many practitioners overlook the final stage of their routine. Daily pressures at work and at home often push people to rush through their day. Still, the way a yoga session is concluded plays an important role in how much benefit one derives from it.

The Ministry of AYUSH has highlighted, through a social media post, that yoga should be approached with care from the first posture to the last. Practising mindful yoga means being fully aware and patient during each exercise. The ministry emphasises that a peaceful end to the session is the most significant component of the entire practice.

People who exercise every morning are advised not to dash to the bathroom right after finishing. The ministry recommends waiting about 25 to 30 minutes after a session before bathing. Heart rate and breathing remain altered for a while after yoga, so a short period of rest helps the body recover.

Eating soon after yoga is also discouraged. As per the ministry, a gap of 15 to 30 minutes is advisable before having food. Once this time has passed, a light and nutritious meal is appropriate. Morning yoga practitioners may opt for fruits, a light snack or a balanced meal that matches their usual diet.

After the physical practice, the ministry suggests sitting quietly for a few minutes in meditation or deep stillness. Choose a calm place, close your eyes and focus on your breath. Conclude the session with a shanti path, which is a closing prayer. You can recite a peace mantra according to your faith, as this can foster positive thinking, gratitude and inner calm.
