Eating Smart in Winter: Warm Meals, Millets and More
New Delhi, October 25: The winter season brings a natural appetite for hot meals and comforting drinks. While flavour is important, health should remain a priority as well. Good eating habits during this season can help nourish the body and support overall comfort.
What to Eat Warm
Fresh, hot food is a simple way to eat well in winter. Dal, vegetables, soups, daliya and khichdi provide nourishment and are easy to prepare. For warm beverages, lukewarm water, soup or tea with little or no sugar are good choices, provided they are not served too hot.
Local and Seasonal Grains
Seasonal and locally grown foods are encouraged during this time. Bajra, jowar, maize, barley and ragi can all be added to daily meals. These grains contain fibre and other essential nutrients. Rotis, daliya and other preparations made from them are tasty and help people feel full for longer.
Dairy, Greens and Fruits
Milk, green leafy vegetables and seasonal fruits deserve a regular place in the diet. A balanced plate offers vitamins, minerals and protein. Variety across meals is the best approach.
Traditional Sweeteners in Moderation
Jaggery and honey hold a special place in winter traditions. Jaggery laddoos, chikki and other traditional dishes are widely loved, and some people add honey to hot drinks. Both, however, contribute added sugar, so they should be eaten in limited amounts.
Use Oil and Ghee Wisely
Cooking fats should be used according to need. Excess ghee or oil should be avoided to keep meals balanced and wholesome through the winter.
