DMA outlines preventive steps as H1N1 spreads across Delhi and suburbs

With H1N1 cases climbing rapidly throughout Delhi and its adjoining suburbs, the Delhi Medical Association has published a comprehensive set of guidelines to help the public protect themselves.

The advisory reminds residents that the virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets. To interrupt transmission, individuals should cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or the inside of their elbow when coughing, and immediately discard used tissues in a sealed container.

Hand hygiene remains a cornerstone of prevention. The association recommends washing hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water several times a day, or applying an alcohol‑based sanitizer when washing facilities are not available. Touching the eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands should be avoided.

Other practical measures include avoiding large gatherings, especially in poorly ventilated indoor settings, and wearing a well‑fitted mask—preferably an N95 filter—when traveling on public transport or visiting markets. Those experiencing flu‑like symptoms are urged to seek professional medical advice without delay.

DMA has also coordinated with Delhi's health department to ensure hospitals are equipped with sufficient beds, ventilators, and medicines. Training sessions are being conducted for frontline staff on early detection, case classification, and home‑care protocols, reinforcing a unified response to the seasonal surge.
