Court Seeks Clarification on Compensation and Safety Measures in Manipur Camps
During the hearing on September 17, the Supreme Court probed into the compensation scheme provided to families of the 25 persons who died in Manipur’s relief camps. The bench asked the state to explain the basis for the ₹20,000‑₹30,000 payouts and to confirm whether the sums were uniform across all cases.
The judges also pressed the Manipur administration to outline the preventive steps taken after the fatalities, such as improvements in medical facilities, regular health check‑ups, and enhanced security within the shelters.
A specific point of concern was the limited number of post‑mortem examinations—only twenty out of twenty‑five deaths were medically investigated. The court demanded a detailed justification for this shortfall and instructed the authorities to complete pending autopsies without delay.
The Manipur Legal Services Authority has been tasked with supervising the filing of FIRs, accelerating investigations, and ensuring that the findings are reported back to the court promptly.
