Kozhikode witnessed a transformative step in public health as Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the foundation for Kerala’s first dedicated organ transplant hospital at Chevayur. The Kerala Institute of Organ Transplantation is poised to become a beacon of hope for patients needing complex surgeries.
Designed to handle every aspect of transplantation—from soft tissue reattachments to pancreas and lung procedures—this facility targets ambitious numbers: 300 bone/soft tissue transplants, 120 bone marrow, 40 lungs, and more each year. The CM highlighted the skyrocketing costs in private sectors, where a single surgery can vary wildly and burden families beyond their means.
‘In an era of rapid medical evolution, this hospital will be unmatched,’ Vijayan remarked, calling for statewide collaboration. Health Minister Veena George described it as a pivotal chapter in Kerala’s health history, revealing plans for affordable post-op drugs nationwide.
Built in two phases on 20 acres formerly part of the skin disease hospital, phase one includes 350 beds, advanced ICUs, 10 OTs, and dialysis units, all in an eight-story structure costing nearly Rs 400 crore total. Beyond treatments, it will train professionals through 31 courses and foster research, funded via KIIFB, positioning Kerala as a national leader in transplantation.
