Practise Prithvi Mudra to Calm the Mind and Refresh Your Skin
Simple yoga practices can sometimes deliver meaningful results, and Prithvi Mudra is a good example. Rooted in the belief that the body is made of five elements, this hand gesture is practised to restore balance in the earth element, which is associated with stability and strength.
The Ministry of AYUSH has noted that Prithvi Mudra is a highly impactful hand gesture for balancing the earth element and encouraging both physical and spiritual wellness. The practice is considered accessible and easy to adopt in daily routines.
In Ayurveda, the ring finger represents the earth element and the thumb represents fire. Joining the tip of the ring finger with the tip of the thumb is believed to awaken the earth element. This, in turn, is linked to the Muladhara chakra, found at the base of the spine.
When the Muladhara chakra is unbalanced, individuals may feel fearful, uneasy or unsettled. Prithvi Mudra is said to create a sense of steadiness in this energy center. Because the earth element represents patience and stability, the gesture can reduce mental restlessness and help the mind remain anchored in the present, leading to greater calmness.
Skin health is another area where the mudra is considered beneficial. The skin is the body's outermost solid covering, and a balanced earth element is thought to provide better nourishment to its tissues. The practice may support detoxification, improve circulation and give the skin a natural glow while reducing dryness.
For individuals with poor digestion or those who are underweight, the gesture is believed to support better absorption of nutrients, which may help in maintaining a healthy body weight.
It is important to note that people with excess kapha dosha or those dealing with severe cold, cough or asthma should consult a yoga expert before making Prithvi Mudra a regular part of their practice.
