Breastfeeding Benefits and Introducing Complementary Foods After Six Months

Breastfeeding is more than a source of calories; it is a complex delivery system for antibodies, hormones, and enzymes that safeguard newborns against disease. Studies show that exclusively breastfed infants have lower rates of respiratory infections, gastrointestinal illnesses, and even chronic conditions later in life. The act of nursing also promotes oral‑motor development, preparing the baby for future chewing and swallowing.

When the infant reaches the six‑month milestone, nutrient demands, especially for iron and vitamin D, increase beyond what milk alone can provide. Parents should begin offering age‑appropriate, easily digestible foods such as mashed bananas, avocado, lentil puree, or iron‑rich infant cereals. These foods should be introduced one at a time, spaced a few days apart, to monitor tolerance and detect potential allergies.

Continuing to breastfeed alongside complementary meals preserves the immunological shield and offers comfort during the weaning process. Health professionals recommend maintaining nursing sessions at least until the child is one year old, if possible, to maximize developmental and health benefits.
