Health officials warn continued measles surge in Bangladesh amid vaccine gaps

Bangladesh is grappling with a worsening measles outbreak as four more children died on Friday, raising the year‑to‑date death figure to 1,114. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed one death as measles‑related; the other three are treated as suspected measles fatalities.

The numbers now stand at 102 confirmed deaths and 1,012 suspected deaths. In the last day, 1,221 suspected measles cases were added, bringing the total suspected cases to 194,084 across the country. Twenty‑one new laboratory‑confirmed infections were also reported, raising the cumulative confirmed case total to 21,623.

Health specialists have blamed the surge on inadequate routine immunisation, postponed supplementary vaccination campaigns, and delays in vaccine procurement during the interim government of 2024‑2025. Hospital protocols for early detection and isolation of infected children have also been identified as weak points.

According to public‑health researcher Mushhtak Hussain, children typically develop sufficient immunity three to four weeks after vaccination, meaning the outbreak’s momentum may last another month before the population gains adequate protection.

An analysis by the Global Center for Democratic Governance labelled the 2026 measles spread as an unexpected but preventable event, highlighting systemic failures in vaccine delivery and case management.
