Bangladesh Measles Deaths Rise Sharply to 560 Children

A fresh wave of measles-related deaths has struck Bangladesh, with five more children succumbing to the disease and raising the total fatalities to 560. The latest figures, released by the Directorate General of Health Services on Wednesday morning, show that the crisis has intensified despite ongoing vaccination efforts that concluded their first phase on May 20. The daily surge in infections remains consistent, with over 1,000 new suspected cases reported almost every day this month. Only three days saw any relief from this pattern. In the most recent 24-hour period alone, authorities identified 62 confirmed measles cases alongside 1,056 suspected infections, pushing the overall suspected case count to 67,079. Medical professionals are expressing concern that the hot weather combined with limited healthcare access in remote areas is worsening transmission rates. The director of the Infectious Diseases Hospital advised families to stay local and minimize movement. The Health Minister echoed these concerns, stressing that infected or recently recovered children should not be taken to crowded locations during Eid celebrations, as public transport and gatherings could further fuel the outbreak.
