Why It’s Irrelevant If Young Audiences Don’t Know Veteran Actors, Claims Mumbai Actor

Mumbai‑based actor Harsh Chhaya told IANS that the expectation for young viewers to recognize senior performers is unreasonable. He explained that cultural memory follows a generational timeline; people are familiar with the faces that dominated the screens when they were children.

According to Chhaya, “If a 20‑year‑old has never watched my movies, it does not diminish my work.” He stressed that an actor’s identity is forged through the exposure they receive, and the audience that experienced his films firsthand is the one best equipped to assess his contribution.

Chhaya noted that the taste of cinema audiences evolves, bringing fresh talent to the forefront while older names gradually fade from mainstream conversation. He recalled that when he first entered the industry, the towering stars for him were Dilip Kumar and Rajendra Kumar. However, he knew very little about the supporting cast that worked alongside them, underscoring the natural knowledge gap.

He added that his own heroes—Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor—were the benchmarks for his generation, illustrating how each era naturally selects its own icons.
