Why 1990s Bollywood Actresses Had More Time to Evolve, Says Veteran Madhur

Madhur, a prominent face of 1990s Hindi cinema, believes that the previous generation of actresses benefited from a gentler entry path. She cited her own experience: after starring in "Phool Aur Kaante" she went on to act in "Roja", "Gentleman" and several other successful projects, each offering a new learning curve.

According to her, the industry’s pace allowed performers to experiment with different looks, acting techniques and character arcs. "We could afford to be imperfect initially; the audience gave us space to improve," she explained.

Conversely, the modern film environment is driven by instant metrics and box‑office expectations. New actors are expected to deliver a flawless performance, complete with perfect hair, makeup and screen charisma, all in their very first release. Failing to meet that bar can lead to a swift exit.

Madhur concluded that while today’s actresses receive considerable grooming and media support, the absence of a gradual growth period makes the career ladder steeper than ever before.
