From College Exams to TV Stardom: Vidya Balan’s ‘Hum Paanch’ Journey
Vidya Balan’s entrance into television was marked by a pivotal phone call from Ekta Kapoor inviting her to join the hit series “Hum Paanch”. At the time, the sitcom was already a household name, having completed a year on the screen. Vidya’s mother, initially indifferent to a career in acting, grew to like the programme because it portrayed a tight‑knit family. The actress managed to appear on the show for one and a half years, but academic responsibilities—particularly college attendance—eventually led her to leave. “Hum Paanch” originally aired from 1995 to 1999, with a second season aired in 2005‑06, starring Ashok Saraf, Rakhi Tandon, Bairavi Raichura and Vandana Pathak. The storyline centered on Anand Mathur’s five daughters—Meenakshi, Radhika, Sweetie, Kajal and Chhoti—making the series a beloved family comedy.
