‘Tanvi the Great’ Turns One: How a Film Changed Perceptions of Autism

A year after its debut, “Tanvi the Great” continues to echo across screens and social media. Anupam Kher, the film’s creator and lead, posted a reflective video on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the widespread impact of his autism‑focused narrative.

The production earned spots at major festivals, was chosen for the Indian Panorama programme, and collected accolades including the FIPRESCI Best Feature Film award and the Best Screenplay prize at the International Film Festival of Australia. The performance of the newcomer actress also garnered Best Actress and Best Debut awards.

Kher, however, insists that the film’s true success is measured by the heartfelt letters from parents, educators, and youngsters. "Many have told us they now view autism differently, some have stopped concealing their child’s condition, and others have gained a clearer understanding of their child’s world," he shared.

The narrative centres on a girl with autism, portraying her resilience as a ‘super‑power’ and urging society to recognise that autistic children are equally capable, only different in the ways they experience the world.
