Supreme Court penalises comic Saman Rana for offensive remarks on disabled

Delhi, July 14 — In a decisive ruling, the Supreme Court fined Saman Rana and fellow performers of "India's Got Latent" three lakh rupees each for allegedly ridiculing people with disabilities on air. The bench chastised Rana for trying to deceive the judges and for providing false testimony. The court set a two‑week window for payment, warning that non‑compliance will trigger stricter consequences. Senior counsel Aparajita Singh, appearing for the CURE SMA Foundation, highlighted that Rana had previously pledged to organise events benefitting the disabled but ignored the foundation’s outreach despite court orders. The foundation also claimed Rana made jokes about a blind newborn suffering from spinal muscular atrophy, who required a 16‑crore injection to survive, and that no apology has been tendered.
