Mediation Directed by Supreme Court to Resolve Rajpal Yadav Check Bounce Litigation
The Supreme Court on Thursday, October 15, intervened in the long‑running check‑bounce saga involving Bollywood star Rajpal Yadav. After confirming that the final ₹85 lakh was deposited in the Court’s registry on October 13, the justices ordered both sides to appear before a designated mediation centre.
The mediation order is aimed at settling the seven cases filed by Murli Projects Private Limited, which stem from a ₹5 crore loan taken by Yadav in 2010 to finance the film “Ata Pata Lapata.” The movie’s poor box‑office performance led to bounced cheques and subsequent legal action. The Supreme Court also instructed the lower court to release the actor’s passport, allowing him to travel to Canada for a scheduled program that could provide additional income.
Chief Justice Surya Kant questioned the parties about the lack of a direct settlement and emphasized the court’s preference for alternative dispute resolution. The actor’s counsel explained that the remaining amount was raised through the sale of ancestral land, despite earlier delays in land registration. With the payment now complete, the Supreme Court’s mediation directive seeks to bring the dispute to a close without further incarceration.
