Sunny Deol’s ‘Surya’ Faces No Court Restriction Despite PIL

A legal challenge against the upcoming release of Sunny Deol’s Surya: Ant Se Aarambh Tak has been dismissed by the Delhi High Court, paving the way for the film’s scheduled theatrical debut. The case originated from a PIL filed by medical practitioners who contested specific narrative choices in the movie’s promotional trailer.

The petitioners highlighted troubling imagery in the teaser that seemingly shows the protagonist attacking hospital staff. Alongside this, they flagged a controversial dialogue implying that doctors manipulate prescriptions for monetary gain. Arguing that these elements could tarnish the profession’s legacy and incite further aggression against healthcare workers, the filers requested an immediate restraining order.

Judges reviewing the matter found insufficient grounds to impose a judicial stay. Emphasizing the standard legal threshold for blocking commercial releases, the bench advised the petitioners to bypass the court system and present their grievances directly to the CBFC. This procedural guidance allows the certification body to evaluate the content against established cinematic standards and recommend cuts or alterations if necessary.

Post-hearing, Dr. Nachiketh Bhatia clarified that the medical community’s stance is centered on public perception management rather than outright suppression. He cautioned that marketing the storyline as based on true events might mislead the public into questioning the integrity of real-world medical institutions. The petitioners continue to advocate for editorial corrections, removal of misleading marketing claims, and explicit fictional disclaimers to maintain industry trust.

M. Padmakumar is behind the camera for this biographical project, featuring Sunny Deol in the titular role. Audiences can expect the film to arrive in cinemas on November 20, 2026.
