How Sunil Grover Turned a Three‑Day Shoot Dismissal into Success

Born on 3 August 1977 in the Haryana village of Mandri Dabwali, Sunil Grover displayed a penchant for humor and impersonation from an early age. His teachers noticed his flair during a school drama competition, prompting admiration from a chief guest who highlighted his uniqueness.

Grover earned a master’s degree in theatre from Punjab University, Chandigarh, where he caught the attention of veteran comic Jaspal Bhatti. The mentor offered him a role in the 1995 television series “Full Tension”, marking Grover’s entry into the medium.

Moving to Mumbai, Grover’s life was far from glamorous. He earned roughly ₹500 a month, living off his savings and parental support. A low point arrived when, after completing three days of shooting for an unnamed show, the producers replaced him without any direct communication. The shock led him to question his suitability for the industry. Determined, he used the setback as motivation rather than defeat.

He branched into radio with shows like “Hansi Ke Fuware”, gaining a following for his vocal comedy. Film opportunities followed, beginning with “Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha” (1998) and continuing with roles in “The Legend of Bhagat Singh”, “Main Hoon Na”, “Gajani”, “Gabbar is Back”, “Baaghi”, “Bharat”, “Goodbye” and “Jawan”.

The breakthrough character Gutthi debuted on “Comedy Nights with Kapil” in 2013, instantly resonating with audiences and eclipsing Grover’s real name. He later portrayed Dr. Mashoor Gulati and Rinku Devi on “The Kapil Sharma Show”. A 2017 disagreement caused a temporary split, but both comedians reunited for “The Great Indian Kapil Show” in 2024.

Beyond sketch comedy, Grover explored serious narratives in web series such as “Tandav”, “Sunflower” and “United Kacche”. Recognised as a Comic Icon by the 2018 IATA Awards, he faced a heart attack in 2022, underwent bypass surgery and returned to work, reaffirming his resilience and dedication to entertainment.
