From Srinagar to Mumbai: The Story of Actor Jeevan
Mumbai, October 23: Hindi cinema has seen many villains who became famous for their screen style rather than their names. Jeevan, a veteran actor, belongs to this group. He made a strong impact as a fearsome villain in films and also gained recognition for playing Narad Muni in mythological movies. His rise, however, did not come easily.
He left home for Mumbai with just Rs 26. At first, he took up small tasks in a studio. During this time, an opportunity to act came his way, and his life moved in a new direction.
Jeevan was born in Srinagar on October 24, 1915. His real name was Omkar Nath Dhar, and he hailed from a Kashmiri Pandit family. His mother died at the time of his birth. His father also died when he was about three years old. Jeevan had a passion for films and acting since childhood, but his family did not approve of working in movies. At that time, a career in the film industry clashed with the traditional outlook of his household.
His longing to become an actor grew so strong that he eventually decided to leave home. Around the age of 18, he reached Mumbai with only Rs 26. The city was known as Bombay back then. Survival and finding a way into the film world were his main concerns. He was hired at a studio, where he pasted silver paper onto reflectors. This job gave him an opportunity to understand how films were made.
The studio is said to have belonged to director Mohanlal Sinha. Jeevan's interest in acting surfaced during his time there. Soon after, he was given a role in a film. His first film is titled 'Fashionable India'. The chance opened a path for him in the acting world.
During his career, Jeevan played many types of characters. However, his portrayal of Narad Muni in mythological films became his most recognisable identity. He appeared in this role in around 49 to 60 films. The 1950 film 'Har Har Mahadev' is especially remembered for his Narad Muni character. The part made him popular with audiences of religious cinema.
Later on, he started taking up villain roles in Hindi films. His dialogue delivery, facial expressions, and way of portraying characters gave him a distinct image. Films such as 'Johnny Mera Naam', 'Amar Akbar Anthony', and 'Dharam Veer' are recalled for his performances. He continued to work for many decades and kept his place in the industry through varied roles.
Jeevan passed away on June 10, 1987.
