Sonae Nigam’s story reads like a classic underdog saga. Born to a singer father, Agam Kumar Nigam, he performed on stage at age four, echoing the melody of Mohammad Rafi’s “Kya Hua Tera Vaada.” Determined to turn music into a profession, he moved to Mumbai at 18, only to face repeated rejections from composers and music directors.

A pivotal moment came when he entered a recording studio hoping for a chance to showcase his talent. The studio turned him down, and he left sobbing. Undeterred, he intensified his vocal practice, sang at live concerts, and cultivated a reputation for replicating Rafi’s style. His dedication attracted Gulshan Kumar, who signed him for the tribute album “Rafi Ki Yaadein.” The subsequent hit “Accha Sila Diya Tune Mere Pyaar Ka” catapulted him into the public eye.

After the breakthrough, Nigam’s discography expanded to include timeless numbers such as “Kal Ho Naa Ho,” “Suraj Hua Madhham,” “Yeh Dil… Deewana,” and “Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin.” He has recorded songs in multiple Indian languages, earning over 6,000 tracks. His contribution to Indian cinema has been recognised with a National Film Award, several Filmfare and IIFA Awards, and the Padma Shri in 2022, reflecting a career built on perseverance and artistry.
