Singer Devi on Bhojpuri Cinema, Ravi Kishan and Reality Shows

Patna, October 26: Renowned folk singer Devi, whose work spans Bhojpuri, Maithili, Magahi and Hindi, has shared her thoughts on the rising popularity of Bhojpuri cinema, actor Ravi Kishan's plan to strengthen the language, and the Bihar government's support for filmmaking. She also commented on the current state of reality shows.

Beginning the discussion, Devi sang 'Chhathi Maiya' and offered Chhath Puja greetings to all. On Ravi Kishan's plan to promote Bhojpuri, she called him a truly versatile artist. She admitted that some of his films have shown a downturn at times. Still, she said, if he feels a sincere desire to do something good for Bhojpuri, that is a very welcome thing. She pointed out that he has acted in Bollywood too and considers him a fine Bhojpuri cinema actor.

Ravi Kishan had earlier presented a private member's bill in the Lok Sabha, the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The bill aims to add Bhojpuri to the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and confer on it the status of an official language.

Devi expressed her views on the quality of Bhojpuri films as well. She believes there is a clear need to raise the level of the industry. She hopes that directors in Bhojpuri cinema will create good films, so that audiences can enjoy stronger work. According to her, films made in earlier years were good, but the standard of today's films has dropped considerably. She urged talented artists from Bihar to step forward, make films and contribute so that the industry can reach higher standards.

Turning to television, Devi raised concerns about reality shows. She said these shows are shaped by marketing strategies and TRP chasing. As popularity grows, the format is designed accordingly, yet she feels little real culture or art is on display. Shows typically feature fun contestants, and viewers enjoy the entertainment. The makers, she said, mainly want their show to perform well.
