The Secret Behind Dil Chahta Hai’s Title Track: A Single Rough Mix Stood Out

Mumbai, September 25 — In an exclusive interview, composer Shankar Mahadevan revealed that the title song of *Dil Chahta Hai* was the product of an intensive mixing session that yielded 21 separate versions. Collaborating with Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonsa and sound engineer Vijay Benegal (Benny), Mahadevan experimented with varied bass lines, drum textures, and novel samples.

Ultimately, the filmmakers chose to keep the original scratch mix—the raw version created at the start of the process. Mahadevan explained in a Spotify‑hosted video, “Benny mixed the track about twenty‑one times, but the version you hear is the rough mix. It possessed a unique charm that the polished alternatives missed. It has the foundational bass, the experimental drum beats and fresh samples we introduced during the early stages.”

He also addressed a prevalent tendency among contemporary musicians to over‑produce tracks. Mahadevan argued that confidence in the core melody, groove, and bass line often reduces the need for excessive layering. A proficient sound engineer can fill any sonic voids through clever mixing, allowing the song’s essence to remain clear.

*Dil Chahta Hai* marked Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut and rapidly became a defining film of early‑2000s Bollywood. Its depiction of urban camaraderie, a memorable Goa road trip, and a soundtrack that blended rock, pop, and Indian musical elements resonated with audiences across generations. The movie’s casual styling, dialogue‑centric storytelling, and modern visual aesthetic continue to influence Indian cinema.

The disclosure of the 21 mixes highlights the meticulous work behind one of the era’s most beloved Bollywood songs and underscores the importance of preserving the original creative spark.
