Behind the Scenes: Sanjay Dutt’s Role in Crafting the Title Track of 'Kante'

Anand Raj Anand recounted the exact moment the title track for Kante was born. The director wanted a powerful musical hook similar to those heard in international spy franchises. Anand described Dutt’s input as vital: "He imagined the character standing with a collar raised, smoking, plotting in a dark cave." Using that visual cue, Anand drafted a short lyrical phrase – "collar thoda upar…" – and expanded it into a full composition.

The producer, Sanjay Gupta, initially doubted the fit of any song in a film populated only by veteran male leads. Yet Dutt’s confidence – "the tunes are good, we’ll make them work" – loosened Gupta’s resistance. After auditioning two test pieces, the team agreed to proceed, and Anand completed the title track in just seven days. The result is a haunting, Sufi‑infused anthem that has become synonymous with Kante’s brand of high‑octane storytelling.
