From Saif Ali Khan to Akshay Kumar: How Haivan’s Villain Was Finalized

Director Priyadarshan’s latest project, Haivan, underwent a notable casting evolution before landing its antagonist. Initially, Saif Ali Khan was the chosen lead for the movie, a decision announced early in the film’s pre‑production phase.

The search for the villain, however, proved to be a stumbling block. Several prominent actors shied away from the role, finding the psychopathic undertones too demanding. Priyadarshan explained that casting decisions are a balance between narrative fit and commercial viability.

In hindsight, the director recalled a moment on the set of his previous film where he hinted at a need for a “psycho” character in a future venture. Akshay Kumar responded enthusiastically, saying he would take on the challenge.

“This willingness changed the entire dynamic,” Priyadarshan noted. “I realized I could have a different kind of Akshay in my film, something the audience hasn’t seen before.”

Consequently, Kumar stepped into the villain’s shoes, transforming the film’s tonal landscape. The shift from Saif to Akshay illustrates the fluid nature of Bollywood casting, where flexibility and actor readiness can reshape a project’s direction.
