The Rise of Bollywood’s Dream Girl After a Harsh Early Setback
Hema Malini’s career narrative reads like a classic underdog story. After being expelled from a Tamil movie for being “too thin”, the teenage actress faced ridicule and self‑doubt. Rather than abandoning her ambition, she leveraged her dance expertise to stay in the public eye. Her perseverance paid off when she was cast by Raj Kapoor in ‘Sapno Ka Saudagar’ (1968), a film that introduced audiences to the charismatic “Dream Girl”.
The early 1970s brought a string of successes: ‘Johnny Mera Naam’ (1970) paired her with Dev Anand, while ‘Sita Aur Geeta’ (1972) showcased her comic timing and earned her a Filmfare trophy. Later projects such as ‘Sholay’, ‘Dream Girl’, ‘Khushboo’, ‘Mira’ and ‘Kinaara’ displayed her range from comedy to serious drama. Over a career spanning roughly 150 films, Malini also explored classical dance, direction, and even politics, becoming a Lok Sabha member from Mathura. The initial rejection, though painful, became the catalyst that propelled her to become one of Indian cinema’s most iconic figures.
