Remembering Sadhana Shivdasani: From ‘Shree 420’ to the Signature ‘Sadhana Cut’

The birthday of Sadhana Shivdasani, one of Bollywood’s most acclaimed actresses of the 60s and 70s, was observed on September 2. The celebration saw heartfelt posts from current stars, including Saara Bano and Jaki Shroff, who recalled the actress’s contributions to Indian cinema.

Sadhana’s first on‑screen appearance was as a background dancer in the legendary song “Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh” from Raj Kapoor’s “Shree 420.” She later secured a small but memorable role in “Abana” (1958) as the protagonist’s younger sister, earning a token payment of ₹1.

Her big break arrived with Shashadhar Mukherjee’s “Love in Shimla” (1960), directed by R.K. Nayyar. The film’s success cemented her status as a leading lady. Inspired by Hollywood’s Audrey Hepburn, she popularized a short, sleek haircut that became known as the “Sadhana cut,” a trend that swept across Indian youth culture.

Throughout her career, Sadhana refused to take on secondary characters, insisting on starring roles only. This principle shaped her filmography, which includes classics such as “Wo Kaun Thi,” “Mera Saaya,” and “Waqt.”

Sadhana passed away on December 25, 2015, but her impact on acting, fashion, and the golden era of Hindi cinema continues to be celebrated by fans and fellow artists.
