Remembering Actress Rita Bhaduri: A Versatile Talent Across Hindi and Gujarati Cinema

Rita Bhaduri entered the world on 4 November 1955, inheriting an early love for movies from a mother who had already acted in films. After honing her craft at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, she made her maiden appearance with “Teri Talash Mein” (1968). A fleeting role alongside Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz in “Aina” (1974) showcased her potential, but it was the 1975 blockbuster “Julie” that truly announced her arrival, as she played the heroine’s confidante and featured in the hit song “Yeh Raatein Nayi Purani”.

From that point, Rita became a dependable supporting actress, contributing to a string of successful projects such as “Saavan Ko Aane Do”, “Anurodh”, “Beta”, “Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!”, “Raja”, “Kya Kehna”, and “Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa”. She possessed an uncanny ability to disappear into any role—be it mother, sister, or the wise family member—making each character feel natural and relatable.

Her spellbinding presence was not limited to Hindi films. In 1976, the Gujarati hit “Lakho Fulani” opened a new chapter, and she spent nearly a decade as the leading lady of Gujarati cinema, delivering numerous box‑office successes and earning a dedicated fan base.

When television gained prominence in the 1990s, Rita shifted smoothly to the small screen. Audiences welcomed her performances in serials like “Kyonki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi”, “Sarabhai vs Sarabhai”, “Kumkum”, “Amaanat”, “Sasural Genda Phool”, and especially the beloved role of the grandmother in “Nimki Mukhiya”.

Over a career comprising about 70 films and more than 20 television dramas, she achieved a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her work in “Raja”. Though she never married, she chose a life of independence. In her final years, Rita battled diabetes and a severe kidney ailment, ultimately passing away on 17 July 2018 at the age of 62.
