Remembering Meenu Mumtaz, Bollywood's Graceful Dancer and Actor

Few artists have left as lasting an impression on Hindi cinema as Meenu Mumtaz. Working in the 1950s and 1960s, a period when education for women was itself considered a remarkable accomplishment, she combined striking beauty with exceptional dance skills to earn a lasting place in film history.

This Friday marks her death anniversary, prompting many to look back at the journey that defined her life and career.

Meenu Mumtaz was born Malikunnisa Ali on April 26, 1942, in Mumbai, into a family rooted in the performing arts. Her father, Mumtaz Ali, was a well-regarded dancer and character actor. Her mother was Latif Unnisa. Meenu was one of eight siblings, and her full brother was the well-known comedian Mahmood Ali.

Her love for dance began in childhood. She regularly performed on stage with her father in different cities. Because of her father's struggle with alcoholism, the family's finances were often under severe strain. At a young age, she resolved that she would build her future in films as well as on stage.

Her determination led to an early opening. In 1955, at just 13, she was offered a role in 'Safi Khatim' by director Nanubhai Vakil. The year 1956 brought her real success through Guru Dutt's superhit film 'CID', which made her popular across the country in a very short time.

After this, her career gained momentum, and she appeared in many major productions. Beyond heroine roles, she also accepted character and side roles. Her filmography includes 'Aasha', 'Maai Baap', 'Halaku', 'Ghar Ghar Ki Baat', 'Chitralekha', 'Chaudahvin Ka Chand', 'Kaagaz Ke Phool' and 'Howrah Bridge'.

In 1963, on June 12, she married director Syed Ali Akbar, known as S. Ali Akbar. The couple had four children, three daughters and a son. After marriage and motherhood, she stepped away from the film industry and later settled in Canada. She passed away on October 23, 2021, at the age of 79.
