In a heartwarming return to his theatrical origins, Pankaj Tripathi’s ‘Lailaaj’ has been selected for the illustrious 25th Bharat Rang Mahotsav, India’s premier theater extravaganza hosted by the National School of Drama. This event draws top talents nationwide, offering a platform that elevates deserving plays to national acclaim.
The actor, who rose to fame through memorable Bollywood roles, couldn’t contain his elation. ‘This feels like a dream realized,’ Tripathi expressed. ‘Theater shaped me, with NSD teaching me the true essence of performance. Presenting ‘Lailaaj’ here is like coming full circle.’
Co-produced with wife Mridula under their Rupkatha Rangmanch, the play is penned and helmed by Faiz Mohammad Khan. It’s the group’s inaugural outing at such a high-profile venue, built on the tireless efforts of a dedicated cast and crew.
A decade after his last stage appearance, Pankaj steps back with a special twist: his daughter Aashi joins him for her debut. ‘Performing with Aashi is priceless,’ he shared. ‘It’s more than a play; it’s a family bond forged on stage.’
Mridula, the play’s co-producer, highlighted the banner’s ethos of genuine narratives. ‘We started Rupkatha to tell stories from the heart, not chase fame,’ she noted. ‘This selection boosts our spirits immensely. Aashi’s entry into theater fills us with pride and emotion.’
As Bharat Rang Mahotsav unfolds, ‘Lailaaj’ emerges as a beacon of theater’s vitality. It underscores how the art form continues to inspire, unite, and provoke thought, even as its stars shine brighter in films. Theater enthusiasts are in for a treat with this authentic, family-driven production.
