Padmini Kolhapure's Journey from Child Artist to Bollywood Actress

Padmini Kolhapure is among those Hindi film performers whose careers began in childhood and grew into lasting recognition on screen. Her transition from a young artist singing in the background to a leading actress is a story that reflects both talent and family support, with an important role played by legendary singer Asha Bhosle.

Padmini was born in Mumbai on November 1, 1965. Her father, Pandit Pandharinath Kolhapure, was connected to classical music, and her mother, Anupama, worked in the airline industry. Creativity ran through the family. Her sister Shivangi Kolhapure is also associated with music and films, and Shivangi's marriage to actor Shakti Kapoor connected the family to the Kapoors. Their daughter, Shraddha Kapoor, is now one of Bollywood's best-known actresses.

From childhood, Padmini showed an interest in singing and dancing. She started working in films at the age of seven. Before taking on acting roles, she contributed chorus vocals to film songs with her sister. Her voice was part of songs in films like 'Yaadon Ki Baraat', 'Kitaab' and 'Dushman Dost'. It was during this phase that she met Asha Bhosle, who was her aunt by relation. Her father was a first cousin of Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar, and Padmini called Asha Bhosle 'Asha Aatya' with great affection.

In an interview, Padmini recalled that Asha Bhosle introduced her to Dev Anand. Asha Bhosle asked him to give Padmini an opportunity if he had any work suitable for her. Following that meeting, Dev Anand offered her a role in 'Ishq Ishq Ishq', and this became her first film. She was very young at the time and had no sense of how her career would develop.

She continued as a child artist in films including 'Zindagi', 'Dream Girl' and 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram'. In Raj Kapoor's 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram', she played Chhoti Roopa, a role that brought her considerable recognition. Raj Kapoor then cast her in the lead role of 'Prem Rog', opposite Rishi Kapoor. She played Manorama, a widow facing social discrimination and difficulties.

Her performance in 'Insaaf Ka Tarazu', released in 1980, was widely appreciated, and she won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress at just 15 years old. In 1982, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for 'Prem Rog'. Winning two major awards at such a young age was a significant achievement in her career.
