Bhopal woke up to sombre news on Thursday morning. Dr Bashir Badr, the 91-year-old maestro of Urdu ghazal, lost his fight against dementia and passed away quietly at his residence. Within hours, social media timelines filled with his timeless couplets and messages of grief. The poet's journey began in a small Faizabad household in 1935. By seven he was already composing verses. After completing his doctorate at Aligarh Muslim University he joined its faculty, shaping young minds while crafting poetry that spoke of love, separation and the quiet truths of everyday life. The 1987 Meerut riots left an indelible scar; his house was torched and years of unpublished work turned to ash. Yet he rebuilt his life in Bhopal and kept writing. His simple, heartfelt style earned him the Padma Shri and a permanent place in the hearts of poetry lovers. Funeral arrangements are being finalised for Thursday evening.
