From Mumbai Chawls to National Cohesion: Lessons from TMKOC

The 18th anniversary of the comedy serial “Taarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chashma” offered producer Asit Modi a platform to discuss the importance of moving beyond narrow identities. He highlighted how the shared experience of living in Mumbai’s historic chawls taught residents to look after one another regardless of caste or creed.

Modi recalled that in the low‑rise complexes of Bhuleshwar, Kalbadevi and Dadar, families shared elevators, courtyards and daily meals. “We did not label each other by religion or language; we identified ourselves as members of the same block,” he explained. That spirit, he believes, can be replicated across the country.

He pointed out that today many urban dwellers have lost contact with the people who work in their buildings. “We rarely greet the watchman or lift operator, yet they are essential threads in the social tapestry,” Modi said. Recognising and thanking them, he argued, is the first step toward rebuilding community ties.

The producer also noted the ripple effect of his show on actual neighbourhoods. Various colonies have approached him, saying the series motivated them to adopt cooperative practices such as shared festivals, collective cleanliness drives and conflict‑resolution meetings. He visited a community in Rajkot that modeled its neighbourhood on the show’s ethos.

Modi’s final appeal was simple: start each interaction by stating “I am Indian”. By placing the national identity first, he believes citizens can dissolve many of the social fissures that currently divide them.
