Mikki Singh Opens Up on Her Role in Indo-American Film
Mumbai, October 24: Actress Mikki Singh is currently appearing in the film 'A Mosquito in the Year', the first Indo-American international feature film, where she plays the key character of Sister Aruna.
In an interview with IANS, the actress shared her thoughts on the film and her role. For her, the most meaningful aspect was getting to play an important part in an international project. She said the character was written with great strength, though it is also a highly demanding one, and that convinced her it was a role worth doing.
Mikki Singh revealed that she was educated in a convent school. Drawing on the expressions and manner of the nuns from that school, she developed the portrayal of Sister Aruna.
Describing her experience with director Nicola Rinciari, she said he has a very clear vision for both scenes and characters. He is respectful toward actors and gives them the freedom to contribute their own ideas. He does not feel an actor must deliver every scripted line exactly as written, and he places strong emphasis on improvisation. He also prepares extensively before filming begins.
She added that he brings out exactly what he needs from each performer. The actors had freedom, but always within the framework of his vision.
Jake Lacy and Nazanin Boniadi also play key roles in the film. Mikki Singh spoke warmly about sharing the screen with British actress Nazanin Boniadi, calling her an excellent actress and a wonderful human being. She said Boniadi never made her feel she was working with a superstar or an international star, and it felt like collaborating with two friends.
On working in a different cultural environment, Mikki Singh said she felt filmmaking is essentially the same across cultures, and actors' preparation follows a similar process. The film was completed in 20 days, with careful planning for every detail. Work had to be finished the same day, leaving no scope to carry it over. She believes the project showed a very high standard of preparation and professionalism.
