Mahadev Betting App Controversy: Shefali Bagga’s Statement on Promotion Claims
Television sports presenter Shefali Bagga responded to allegations linking her to the Mahadev betting app scandal on October 8, stating that her role was confined to unintentional brand promotion on social media. She emphasized that she had no contractual ties or business dealings with the betting platform.
During an interview, Bagga explained that many celebrities occasionally feature products online without a formal endorsement agreement, and she was no different. She affirmed her complete cooperation with the Enforcement Directorate, the return of all money received, and her belief in the Indian judicial process.
The Enforcement Directorate’s charge sheet alleges that Bagga received close to ₹1.5 crore for creating a promotional video for the Mahadev betting syndicate. A search of her Delhi residence led to the seizure of ₹30 lakh in cash by ED officials.
Mahadev Betting, sometimes referred to as Mahadev Book, has grown into one of the country’s largest illegal online betting platforms, enabling massive wagers on sports such as cricket and football via a mobile app and website. The operation is said to involve several high‑profile individuals, and prior investigations have resulted in the confiscation of assets worth crores and the arrest of numerous participants.
Authorities have indicated that the probe will expand further to dismantle what they describe as a country‑wide illegal gambling network.
