Madhu Pleads for Greener, Quieter Diwali Free of Firecrackers

Mumbai, October 28: Actress Madhu has urged people to observe a firecracker-free Diwali, pointing to the harmful effects of air and noise pollution on both people and pets. She admitted the request is emotionally difficult, given how deeply rooted the festival's firecracker traditions are in her own life.

In a video posted on social media, Madhu spoke about her memories of Diwali and the special significance of this year's festival. She shared that her children's birthdays fall close to Diwali, adding to the family's joy.

She said that as a child, setting off firecrackers was a highlight of Diwali. She competed with her cousins over who was the bravest and would run barefoot while holding strings of crackers, without thinking about injuries.

Madhu said that asking people to give up crackers now feels like turning away from her own sweet childhood memories. Yet, she believes the current environment demands caution and restraint.

According to her, the city's air quality is already poor, and firecrackers would add to the problem. She noted that several people are battling breathing-related illnesses and that festive planning should consider their wellbeing.

Madhu also spoke about the impact of loud sounds on pets. She explained that dogs in particular become terrified by sudden noise, often running away in fear and becoming difficult to handle. She asked pet owners to be considerate and help lower the noise levels.

She concluded that Diwali does not need firecrackers to be celebrated joyfully. Wearing colourful clothes, meeting family and friends, embracing loved ones, and sharing sweets can make the festival memorable. The essence of Diwali, she said, is spreading love and goodwill, and people should avoid doing anything that causes discomfort to others.
