The Life and Legacy of Kumari Naj, Bollywood’s Forgotten Voice

Born in 1944, Kumari Naj (originally Salma Beg) captured audiences as Baby Naj, a child prodigy whose performance in "Boot Polish" earned her accolades at home and abroad. She continued to act in notable Hindi films such as "Devi" and "Kagaz Ke Phool" before transitioning to supporting parts in the 1970s, including a role opposite Rajesh Khanna in "Sachcha Jhootha". Seeking fresh opportunities, she embraced Bhojpuri cinema, starring in titles like "Bidhesia" and "Saiya Se Neha Lagibe". When on‑screen opportunities waned, Naj turned to dubbing, becoming the Hindi voice behind Shree Devi’s early movies, notably "Himmatwala" and "Tohfa". Married to actor Subiraj Kapoor, she raised two children. Her death on 19 October 1995 at age 51 marked the end of a versatile career that spanned acting, singing, and dubbing.
