The Life Journey of Naren Chand – Singer of ‘Beshak Mandir Masjid Tooro’

Born into a devout Sikh family, Naren Chand’s early years were steeped in the sounds of bhajans and aartis. His mother’s daily chants nurtured an innate love for melody, prompting the child to start singing at a tender age. Without a radio or gramophone at home, Chand honed his craft by standing outside record stores, listening intently, and replicating the songs of legends like Mohammed Rafi and Manna Dey.

His talent soon found a stage in local gatherings, where community members praised his vocal strength. A mischievous yet lively temperament earned him the nickname “Chanchal” from a schoolteacher, a name that would later become his professional moniker.

A pivotal moment arrived when Raj Kapoor, attending a cultural program, was moved by Chand’s rendition of a Bulleh Shah Sufi poem. Kapoor’s endorsement led to Chand’s casting in “Bobby,” where his performance of “Beshak Mandir-Masjid Tooro…” captured the nation’s imagination. The award-winning song solidified his reputation as both a devotional singer and a playback artist.

Over the following years, Chand contributed to several Hindi films and explored Punjabi and other regional music, yet his heart remained with the bhajans that first defined him. His compositions such as “Chalo Bulawa Aaya Hai” and “Tune Mujhe Bulaya Sherawaliye” continue to echo in temples and community halls.

Naren Chand passed away on 22 January 2021 at Apollo Hospital in Delhi, aged 80, after battling health issues. His legacy lives on through the timeless hymns and film songs that still inspire reverence and joy.
