Legendary Film Scorer Deva Succumbs to Illness in Chennai Hospital
Tamil cinema’s beloved music maestro Deva, often referred to as "Thenisai Thendral," passed away on Saturday at the age of 75 after a brief hospitalization in Chennai. The veteran composer was admitted to Sun Hospital in Kodambakkam when his health took a sudden turn for the worse, and he died there later that day.
Deva’s entry into movies began with the 1986 film "Maatukaramanaru," and he soon earned acclaim for pioneering a fresh song format that blended western sounds with classic Tamil rhythms. His discography boasts numerous blockbusters, notably Rajinikanth’s "Annamalai," "Arunachalam," and "Basha," alongside many self‑sung tracks.
In a recent press interaction for the movie "Misaya Murukku 2," Deva recounted how he became the 28th music director in an era dominated by Ilaiyaraaja and A.R. Rahman, asserting his determination to create a unique musical identity through the "gaana" genre.
A recipient of the Kalaimamani award and the 1990 state film accolade, Deva’s artistic contributions continue through his son Srikanth Deva, a noted composer, and his nephew Jai, a popular actor. The composer’s remains will be taken to his Vadapalani residence at 2 p.m. on Saturday, allowing fans and industry peers to offer final tributes.
