Krishna Kumar’s ‘GDN’ Unveils Karunakaran’s Role as Perunkili

Mumbai – The makers of ‘GDN’, the period drama directed by Krishna Kumar, released a first‑look photograph of Karunakaran on their Instagram feed on Saturday, August 1. The picture introduces the actor as Perunkili, a pivotal character in the film that chronicles the extraordinary life of G.D. Nayudu, the Indian inventor, farmer and philanthropist.

Accompanying the image, the team wrote, “Introducing Karunakaran as Perunkili. Power has many allies.” Earlier promotional material had already displayed Sheela as the young Chelmal, T.J. Arunachalam as a youthful G.D. Nayudu, and Aditi Balan as Padmavati. The lead role of G.D. Nayudu will be embodied by R. Madhavan, often hailed as “India’s Edison.”

The narrative follows Nayudu’s groundbreaking inventions, his struggle against British colonial rule, and his steadfast rebellion. A trailer released ahead of the film offers a compelling snapshot of these events. Principal photography was largely conducted in Coimbatore, the city where Nayudu set up his workshop and conducted much of his work.

The screenplay is a joint effort by Krishna Kumar Ramkumar and R. Madhavan. Production is backed by Varjeev Moolan and R. Madhavan’s banner. Music composition is credited to Govind Vasant, while Arvind Kamanathan provides the cinematography. The ensemble cast also features Jayaram, Priyaman, Dushara Vijayan, Satyaraj, Vijay Rai and T.J. Arunachalam in essential roles.

‘GDN’ is slated for a nationwide theatrical release on August 7, 2026, and will be closely observed for audience reaction.
