Kerala Film Body Faces Governance Crisis After Mass Resignations

The Malayalam Movie Artists Association (AMMA) is in the midst of a governance upheaval after the entire executive committee, led by former president Shweta Menon, stepped down following a contentious annual meeting on June 21.

In response, the general body approved a temporary nine‑member committee to oversee operations until the next election cycle. The interim panel is chaired by veteran actor Ramesh Pisharadi, with ex‑MLA K.B. Ganesh Kumar serving as a member.

Shweta Menon quickly questioned the legality of this arrangement, arguing that the association’s constitution mandates that the incumbent executive remains responsible for administrative duties until a fresh election is conducted. She labeled the ad hoc committee as unconstitutional and without statutory basis.

Menon also claimed that a pre‑planned motion by a bloc of 10‑15 members to dismiss the existing executive did not secure the two‑thirds majority required for such a decision, making the motion ineffective.

Her statements emphasized that certain members were deliberately sowing confusion to redirect the association’s course for individual benefits, and she vowed to keep raising the issue until a resolution is reached.
