Karan Johar Reflects on Ae Dil Hai Mushkil's Decade-Long Legacy

Filmmaker Karan Johar has looked back at his 2016 romantic film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil on the occasion of its 10th anniversary. Through a social media post accompanied by a clip from the movie, he opened up about the personal roots of the story and the lessons he drew from unrequited love.

Johar described the film as a blend of his many experiences with love and the wish to be with someone, along with his own feelings of heartbreak. He wrote that the film will always hold a personal place in his heart.

He recalled that one of the most emotional phases of his life led him to a key realisation: one-sided love deserves neither regret nor sympathy. He said it deserves serious, thoughtful understanding. In his view, the real strength of love is not measured by whether it is returned.

The director explained that a person can grow stronger without receiving love in return. Loving someone, he noted, brings a deeper understanding of oneself and the world. He wrote that genuine love must be selfless and that those who love must let go of the ego contained in the phrase 'I love you'.

Addressing the film's divided reception, Johar admitted it had imperfections and that audiences disagreed about its ending. Nevertheless, he maintained that if he were to tell the story again today, he would tell it in the same manner, accepting the flaws that some viewers had noticed.

He emphasised that no art can be perfect and that viewers are free to form their own opinions. For a storyteller, however, belief in one's own vision is vital. Johar credited Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Fawad Khan for grasping his perspective and bringing the story to the screen. He also thanked the entire cast and crew.

In closing, he said the film was built on the theme of one-sided love and that the audiences who embraced it would always have his unconditional love. He signed off by saying he loved his audiences from the bottom of his heart and asked them to keep him in their prayers.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, a romantic musical drama, was written, directed and produced by Karan Johar under the Dharma Productions banner. It starred Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in lead roles and was released worldwide on October 28, 2016, coinciding with Diwali.
