How Johaar Sahgal Brought Indian Dance to the World Stage

Returning to India in 1935, Johaar joined the troupe of celebrated choreographer Uday Shankar. Together they toured Japan, Egypt, Europe and the United States, presenting Indian classical and folk forms to foreign audiences. Her own performances blended the precision she gained in Germany with traditional Indian gestures, creating a hybrid style that attracted worldwide attention. Later, as a teacher at Shankar’s institute, she mentored a new generation of dancers, ensuring the cross‑cultural dialogue continued.
