How Jasraj Brought Classical Voice to Indian Cinema

Beyond the concert hall, Jasraj’s voice entered Indian film. He sang the devotional piece based on Raga Ahir Bhairav for the 1966 movie ‘Ladki Sahyadri Ki’, composed by V. Shantaram, whose daughter he later married. In 1973 he performed a jugalbandi with Pandit Bhimsen Joshi for the film ‘Birbal My Brother’. Decades later, his timeless timbre appeared in songs for the horror thriller ‘1920’ (2008) and the internationally acclaimed ‘Life of Pi’ (2012), demonstrating his adaptability across eras.
