Jagadhatri's Sayantani Ghosh on Justice and the Thin Line of Revenge
Mumbai, November 1: In the hit television serial 'Jagadhatri', actress Sayantani Ghosh plays Maya Deshmukh, a fearless and commanding business and media tycoon. Known for her strong presence on screen, Maya is a character that raises questions about power, morality and the meaning of fairness.
Sayantani believes that these same questions apply to real life. According to her, when people feel justice is out of reach, their feelings can sometimes lead them down the path of revenge.
'Justice and revenge are often two sides of one coin, separated by a very fine line,' she said. 'Legally, a person may be punished and justice may be served. But the victim might still feel that they did not receive what they needed. That is when the situation becomes complex.'
The actress admitted that it can be hard to pinpoint exactly where justice ends and revenge begins. She said she personally believes in striking a balance between rules and the guidance of the heart and mind.
'Some rules cannot be argued with, and a society needs structure and discipline. Yet, some expectations come from social commitment, and they are not always right for every individual,' she said.
Sayantani suggested that people should question certain social expectations and consider what works best for them, rather than following every rule blindly. She cautioned, however, that being rebellious just to be rebellious is not the answer.
On her character, she said Maya has some aspects of her own personality, but also influences her in different ways. When an actor plays a role for a long time, the boundary between the real person and the character can become blurred.
'I feel Maya has some of Sayantani's shades, and there are ways in which Maya inspires me,' she said. 'As an actor, you always carry something from the characters you portray. They make you look at situations differently and help you discover perspectives you might never have thought of.'
