Excitement is building around actress Bhumi Pednekar as she gears up for the release of her much-awaited web series ‘Dal Dal’ on Prime Video. Diving back into serious drama, Bhumi portrays DCP Rita Ferreira, a complex character whose subtlety proved to be her toughest challenge yet.
In a candid chat, Bhumi revealed the steep learning curve. Rita’s personality—serene on the surface, turbulent within—required extensive study. ‘The script hooked me immediately, but understanding Rita’s inner world took nearly five months,’ she explained. ‘She’s not one to wear her heart on her sleeve; everything simmers beneath.’
Collaboration was key. Bhumi spent countless hours brainstorming with director Amrit Raj Gupta and producer Suresh Triveni, dissecting every micro-reaction. ‘Take the dead body scene,’ she illustrated. ‘You’d expect horror or recoil, right? Not Rita. We refined her response through intense debates—cool, collected, but eyes betraying the storm.’
Balancing restraint with depth pushed Bhumi’s boundaries. ‘Her emotional range is so limited, yet I had to be creatively explosive within it,’ she noted. Interactions with Rita’s mother demanded layered subtlety, leaving Bhumi emotionally spent after shoots. ‘The fatigue was real, but so was the joy at the end.’
Based on the hit novel ‘Bhendi Bazaar’ by Vish Dhamija, the series is helmed by Amrit Raj Gupta with production by Abundantia Entertainment’s Vikram Malhotra and Suresh Triveni. Samara Tijori and Aditya Rawal co-star. ‘Dal Dal’ drops on Prime Video January 30, available in 240 countries worldwide.
