Iconic Songs of the 60s and 70s Crafted by Madan Mohan

Madan Mohan’s name is inseparable from the soundscape of Hindi cinema in the 1960s and 1970s. After his army stint and a formative period at All India Radio, he broke through with "Aankhen" (1950) and quickly became a sought‑after composer. His oeuvre includes masterpieces such as "Ada", "Dekh Kabira Roya", "Sharabi", "Woh Kaun Thi?", "Mera Saaya", "Haqeeqat", "Dastak", "Heer Raanjha" and "Laila Majnu". The composer’s strength lay in his ability to blend rigorous classical training with accessible, emotionally charged melodies, a blend that shone most brightly in his ghazals. He worked hand‑in‑hand with lyricists like Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Kaifi Azmi, Rajinder Krishan, Sahir Ludhianvi and Majrooh Sultanpuri, creating songs that remain staples on radio and streaming platforms. Among his most beloved numbers are "Lag Ja Gale", "Naina Barse", "Kar Chale Hum Fida" and "Yeh Duniya Yeh Mahfil", each exemplifying his lyrical sensitivity and melodic richness. In 1971 he was honoured with the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for "Dastak", cementing his status as a leading figure of his era. Though he succumbed to illness on 14 July 1975, his contributions continue to influence contemporary composers and delight generations of listeners.
