Himani Shivpuri: From NSD Stage to Hum Aapke Hain Koun

New Delhi, October 23: The journey of actress Himani Shivpuri offers a clear example of how theatre training can lead to film success. Her entry into 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun' came through a moment that surprised even her, and it reshaped the film's narrative in a way few audiences would expect.

Himani Shivpuri was born on October 24, 1960, in Dehradun. Her father, Dr. Haridutt Bhatt 'Shailesh', was a noted writer and educator. She studied at Doon School, and her early fascination with theatre began during her school years.

She later joined the National School of Drama, where she developed her acting skills. For several years she remained active in theatre, which she regarded as her first love. Her commitment to the stage continued even after she gained recognition in the film industry.

Her career took a decisive turn while she was performing in the play 'Azhar Ka Khwab'. Among those who came to see the production was filmmaker Suraj Barjatya, who was then working on 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun'. He was greatly impressed by her acting.

According to Himani, Barjatya told her that the script had already been finalised. However, after seeing her performance, he decided to introduce a Muslim character into the film. This was a remarkable opportunity for her, and the film became an important milestone in her career.

The success of the film opened new doors in Bollywood. Himani later appeared in films such as 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge', 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' and 'Pardes', taking on supporting roles that were widely appreciated. She also made audiences laugh in films like 'Hero No. 1', 'Biwi No. 1' and 'Ek Aur Ek Gyarah'. Today, she is remembered as an actress who made every role, big or small, memorable.
